You may already be closer to a free Hyatt night than you know. World of Hyatt's Brand Explorer pays a Category 1-4 free night for every five Hyatt brands you have not stayed at before, over the life of your membership, with no credit card required. Two rules decide whether it is worth planning around: brands never recycle, so a second award needs five entirely new brands, and Hyatt's marketing page lists points stays as qualifying while the program terms name only paid Eligible Rates and Free Night Award redemptions. The short version: You may already be closer to a free Hyatt night than you know. World of Hyatt pays you a free night every time you complete stays at five Hyatt brands you have not used before, for as long as you are a member. You do not need a Hyatt credit card. But two rules decide whether it is worth planning around: brands never recycle, so the second award needs five brands you have never stayed at, and Hyatt's terms and Hyatt's marketing page disagree about whether a points stay counts. Read from the World of Hyatt program terms and a live member account on August 14, 2026.
The counter has been running the whole time you have been a member. Hyatt tracks every brand you have ever stayed with, going back years, and plenty of people are sitting on three or four brands without knowing a free night is one stay away. Opening the tracker costs nothing and takes about thirty seconds.
Most Hyatt advice starts with the co-branded credit card. Brand Explorer does not need one. Nothing in the program terms conditions this award on holding any card, and the earning requirement is written entirely in terms of stays.
Here is how your account describes it:
"Be rewarded with a free night for every five unique brands you experience with the Brand Explorer Award."
The terms put the same thing at lifetime scale: "Measurement continues over the life of a Member's Program membership."
This is the part that will cost someone a stay, so we are putting it first.
Hyatt's Brand Explorer marketing page says three things count:
"Pay an Eligible Rate, redeem points or redeem an earned Free Night Award at five different Hyatt brands and earn a free night at a Category 1-4 hotel."
The program terms say two:
"A Member may earn a 'Brand Explorer Free Night Award' after paying an Eligible Rate or redeeming a Free Night Award for a completed stay of one (1) night or more at a participating hotel or resort from five (5) different Hyatt brands"
The terms then date each qualifying route, and again there are only two:
"Measurement of qualifying stays for a Brand Explorer Free Night Award began on March 1, 2017, for stays where a Member pays an Eligible Rate and on January 1, 2018, for stays where a Member redeems a Free Night Award."
A Free Night Award is a certificate. A points redemption is not the same thing, and a points stay is named on the marketing page but not in the terms.
We are not going to tell you which one wins, because we cannot read that anywhere. Both are Hyatt's own words, and the marketing page is not a rumour, so a points stay may well credit.
What that means in practice depends on why you are booking. If you are already staying on points at a brand you have never used, watch the tracker afterwards and see whether it ticks. It costs you nothing to find out. If you are booking a stay specifically to add a brand, book it on a paid Eligible Rate or with a Free Night Award, because those are the two the terms name. The difference matters only when the stay exists for the award.
The award repeats, but not the way most people assume:
"A Member who previously earned a Brand Explorer Free Night Award may earn an additional award only upon completing qualifying stays at another group of five (5) different participating Hyatt hotel brands. (That is, if you stay at a Park Hyatt hotel and that stay counts towards your first Brand Explorer Free Night Award, future stays at any Park Hyatt hotel or resort will not count towards a second.)"
Your first five are the easy five. The second award needs five brands you have never touched, and the third needs five more. This is why the tracker in your account keeps counting upward past five rather than resetting.

A real member tracker, read on August 14, 2026. This account has already claimed one free night, so its counter runs from six to ten rather than one to five. The brands with a tick are the ones already used, and they can never be used again for a future award.
The terms group a number of independently-named hotels under a single brand for this award:
"Participating properties within each of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, JdV by Hyatt, Hyatt Vacation Club, Destination by Hyatt, Bunkhouse, and Unscripted by Hyatt brands ... while they may be independently branded, will each constitute a single Hyatt brand"
So two different JdV hotels with two different names give you one tick, not two. The terms even flag a trap by name: "Unscripted Durham operates as part of the JdV by Hyatt brand, and is not an Unscripted by Hyatt hotel."
Three brands are also only partly in. The terms list "Alila (some locations only)", "The Standard (some locations only)" and "Bunkhouse (some locations only)". And anything Hyatt that is not on the brand list counts as plain Hyatt:
"Properties that participate in the Program, but do not operate under one of the brands identified above, will be deemed part of the 'Hyatt' brand"
| Rule | The terms |
|---|---|
| Where you can use it | "redeemable only for Category 1-4 hotels and resorts" |
| What room | "one (1) night in a standard room, only when standard rooms are available at the Standard Rate" |
| How long it lasts | "valid for one (1) year from the date of issuance" |
| Blackout dates | "not subject to blackout dates at Hyatt hotels and resorts" |
| The exception | "may not be redeemable where a hotel or resort imposes a minimum-length-of-stay requirement" |
Category 1-4 is the honest ceiling here. Hyatt's chart runs to Category 8, so this is a Hyatt Place or a Hyatt House or a good Category 4, not a Park Hyatt. It is still a free night with no blackout dates, which is better than most hotel certificates.
If you want the wider picture, our World of Hyatt complete guide covers the award chart and elite tiers, and the best Chase cards for Hyatt redemptions covers earning the points. Neither is required for this award.
