Delta is running a SkyMiles award flash sale through September 24, 2026. Round-trip Main cabin awards start at 12,800 miles domestically, with Rome, Porto, Catania, Marrakesh and Cape Town at 68,000 miles round trip from Atlanta. The deals we found across nine origins, what the fine print says, and where the miles should come from.
Delta is running a SkyMiles award flash sale, and it ends on Thursday. The page says it plainly: "Take advantage of limited-time flight deals across the globe through September 24, 2026." Every fare on it is a round trip, in Main cabin, on a fixed pair of dates Delta has already chosen. Domestic starts at 12,800 miles. Rome, Porto, Catania, Marrakesh and Cape Town all appear at 68,000 miles round trip from Atlanta, and less from some other cities.
We read the page on September 22, 2026 and pulled the deals for nine origins. What follows is what was showing that morning, what the fine print actually says, and where the miles are worth getting from. Availability moves, so treat every line as a starting point rather than a promise.
It is an award sale, not a cash fare sale. You pay miles plus taxes, and Delta's own wording is that you "pay taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges at the time of booking." On domestic routes those taxes were $12 on almost every deal we checked. On international ones they ran from $16 to $172.
Three things decide whether a given line is real for you.
The dates are Delta's, not yours. Each deal carries one departure and one return date. The booking link opens a search with flexible dates switched on, so you can look either side of them, but the advertised price belongs to that pair.
It is Main cabin, round trip. The number you see covers both directions. That is the part people misread: 68,000 miles to Rome is the whole trip, not each way.
Availability is thin by design. Delta says so in the same fine print: award availability "is limited and may not be available on every flight or in every market."
These are the lowest fares we saw from each origin on September 22. All are round trip, all in Main cabin.

The long-haul list is the more interesting half, because Delta prices international economy awards high most of the time.

Cape Town for 68,000 miles round trip is the line we would look at first. So is Lisbon out of Dallas Fort Worth at 50,400, which is lower than Atlanta's European fares despite Atlanta being the hub.
If you carry a Delta SkyMiles American Express card, every number above comes down another 15%. Delta calls the benefit TakeOff 15, and its own page limits it to the Gold, Platinum and Reserve cards, personal and business, whose holders "save 15% when booking Award Travel with miles on Delta flights" through delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The Blue card is the one that does not get it. Delta's own worked example on that page is a 33,000-mile round trip falling to 28,000.
Applied to the sale, that is the difference between a good fare and a rare one.

Two limits sit in Delta's footnote, and both matter here: the discount is "not applicable to partner-operated flights or to taxes and fees." A transatlantic itinerary routed on a joint-venture partner rather than Delta metal will not take it, so check the operating carrier on the specific flights before you count on the lower number. The cheapest way into the benefit is the Delta SkyMiles Gold at $150 a year. Delta has no award chart, so there is no published number to compare these against. What you can do is price your own dates both ways before you commit, in miles and in cash, and take whichever is better. The tools we use for that are in award search tools compared. Our data values SkyMiles at about 1.1 cents each, which is the low end of the major programmes and the reason a sale like this matters more for Delta than it would for a programme with a fixed chart.
At that valuation, 68,000 miles is roughly $750 of value spent on a round trip to Rome or Cape Town. Whether that beats paying cash depends entirely on your dates, so check both.
If you are short, the transfer that works is American Express Membership Rewards at 1:1 into SkyMiles. That is the only mainstream transfer route worth using here. Marriott Bonvoy moves at 3:1 and World of Hyatt at 5:2, and both destroy value on the way in.
If you fly Delta enough to carry a co-brand, the Gold earns 2x on Delta, dining and groceries, and the Reserve earns 3x on Delta. Neither is worth opening for one sale, though the 15% above changes the arithmetic if you fly Delta more than twice a year. One caution on transfers: they are one way and final. Move points to SkyMiles only once you have found the seat you want and you are ready to book it.
Open the sale page, set your own city, and look for the routes you would actually fly. Check the advertised date pair first, then a few days either side with the flexible search Delta's own booking link opens. Price the same trip in cash before you spend the miles.
