Rakuten One-Day 10% Travel Cash Back: Today and the Playbook for Every Event

Rakuten is paying up to 10% cash back on Expedia, Priceline, and Hotels.com today only, against usual rates of 3 to 4%. The stack with your travel card, the up-to fine print, and the playbook for every one-day event Rakuten runs.

Rakuten is running a one-day travel event today: up to 10% cash back at major travel booking sites, against everyday rates of 3 to 4%. The countdown on Rakuten's own promotion page says it ends tonight. Here is what is included, the stack that makes it worth more, and the playbook for these events, because this is not the last one.

Today's event, from Rakuten's page

Rakuten's promotion page headlines it plainly: "Get 10% Cash Back on travel," with a countdown timer attached. The stores shown at the top of the event:

Store Event rate Usual rate shown
Expedia Up to 10% cash back was 3%
Priceline Up to 10% cash back was 4%
Hotels.com Up to 10% cash back listed in the event

The phrase to respect is "up to." Rates can differ by category within a store, so check the rate Rakuten shows you at click time. That number is the contract.

Update note: this event ends tonight per Rakuten's countdown. If you are reading this later, the specific rates above have expired, but the playbook below applies to every one-day travel event Rakuten runs.

The stack that doubles the win

Cash-back portals layer on top of card rewards. The full stack on a $500 hotel booking today:

  1. Start at Rakuten, click through to the store. Up to 10% back is about $50 on that booking.
  2. Pay with your best travel card. A card earning 3x to 4x on travel adds its own layer on the same dollars.
  3. The card's portal rules still apply. Some premium card credits and elevated rates require booking through the card's own travel portal instead, and a portal booking usually cannot go through Rakuten. If your card's math depends on its portal, run both numbers before choosing a door.

Two layers, one purchase. That is the entire trick, and it works on every portal event.
