American Express is running a complimentary-third-night promotion at six U.S. Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection properties. The promotion requires an Amex Travel booking, and the Platinum Card's semiannual hotel credit pays out on a prepaid Amex Travel booking. It is the same booking, so a three-night stay costs two nights minus up to $300.
American Express is running a promotion that gives Platinum Card Members a free third night at six U.S. hotels. Amex announced it on its own newsroom on August 25, 2026, and the wording is short enough to quote in full:
"Platinum Card® Members can enjoy a complimentary third night at select Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection properties across the U.S. through Amex Travel™."
Three nights, pay for two. On a $900 weekend that is $300 you keep.
The more useful part is what happens when you put this on top of a credit the same card already gives you for the same booking. Done in the right order, a three-night stay at one of these properties can cost less than two nights would have.
Amex named them, along with which program each one sits in. That matters, and I will explain why in a moment.

Five are Fine Hotels + Resorts. One, the InterContinental in Chicago, is The Hotel Collection. Amex attaches a different condition to that one:
"(The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. Booking and travel dates vary by property and terms apply.)"
The Platinum Card carries a hotel credit that applies to exactly the kind of booking this promotion requires. Amex describes it like this on the card's own page:
"get up to $300 back in statement credits semi-annually on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel when you pay with your Platinum Card."
Read those two things next to each other. The promotion requires a Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection booking through Amex Travel. The credit pays out on a prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection booking through Amex Travel. It is the same booking.
So on a three-night stay at one of these six properties:
Two conditions decide whether the credit actually fires, and both are in Amex's own sentence. It has to be prepaid, and it has to be booked through American Express Travel. Book the same room on the hotel's own website and you get neither the free night nor the credit.
Take a three-night stay with a $450 nightly rate. The numbers below are arithmetic on that rate, not a quote from Amex, and your rate will be whatever the property charges on your dates.

The free night is worth $450 here. The credit is worth up to $300 on top. Neither one requires you to spend anything you were not already spending, which is the whole point.
I want to be straight about the gaps, because they decide whether this is bookable for your dates.
There is no single deadline. Amex wrote "booking and travel dates vary by property." That is not a soft warning, it is the actual rule. One of the six may stop accepting the offer next month and another may run into next year. There is no published master end date to plan around.
Amex says "select" properties. The promotion is on select Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection properties, and these six are the ones Amex chose to feature in a long-weekend article. The article does not say these six are the only ones. If your city is not on the list, that is a reason to check, not a reason to give up.
Rooms and rates are not specified. Amex did not publish which room categories qualify, or whether the free night is the cheapest of the three. Every property sets its own terms here.
All three of those are answered in one place: the property's own page inside Amex Travel, which shows the offer attached to that specific hotel on your specific dates. That is the check to run before you get attached to a plan.
You already hold the Platinum Card. Then this is free money on a trip you were taking anyway, and the only work is booking through Amex Travel instead of the hotel's site. Check whether you have used your semiannual hotel credit for the current half of the year before you book, because timing the stay into an unused half is worth up to $300.
You are considering the card. The annual fee is $895. That is a real number and this promotion does not pay for it by itself. What it does is sit alongside a hotel credit worth up to $600 a year, and the two working together on a single trip is how the fee starts making sense. Whether the rest of the card's credits fit your life is a separate question, and a longer one.
You do not have the card and were not going to get one. Then skip it. A free third night at six luxury hotels is not a reason to pay $895.
For The Hotel Collection property in Chicago, remember the two-night minimum Amex named.
