Amex Gold April 2026 Refresh: What Changed and Whether You Should Care

Amex updated the Gold Card on April 30, 2026: same $325 annual fee, same 100K bonus, but the welcome spend requirement jumps from $6,000 to $8,000. New 5x earn on Amex Travel hotels, Hertz Five Star status, and rotating dining credit partners.

Amex Gold April 2026 Refresh: What Changed and Whether You Should Care

Quick take: On April 30, 2026, American Express refreshed the Gold Card with mostly small, mostly positive changes. The headline number that affects new applicants: the welcome offer spend requirement jumped from $6,000 to $8,000 in 6 months. Same up-to-100,000 Membership Rewards bonus, same $325 annual fee. Existing cardmembers don't lose anything; new applicants need to spend $2,000 more to earn the same bonus.

Plus four genuinely new benefits — three permanent, four temporary 60th-anniversary perks. Here's the full picture.

What's actually changing

Change Before After
Welcome offer spend requirement $6,000 in 6 months $8,000 in 6 months
Welcome offer points up to 100,000 MR up to 100,000 MR (unchanged)
Earn rate on Amex Travel prepaid hotels 2x 5x
Hertz car-rental status None Complimentary Five Star (mid-tier; enrollment required)
Annual fee $325 $325 (unchanged)

That's the entire structural change. The earn-rate bump and the new Hertz status came at no cost to existing fee — that's unusual and worth flagging.

Dining credit (still $120/yr) — partner roster shuffled

The up-to-$10/month, up-to-$120/year Dining statement credit doesn't change in dollar value. But the merchant list rotates:

Status Merchants
Newly added (effective immediately) Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder
Continuing The Cheesecake Factory, Five Guys, Grubhub
Sunsetting June 30, 2026 Goldbelly, Wine.com

Goldbelly and Wine.com exited the program June 30, 2026. You're now choosing among the five remaining merchants. The credit still requires enrollment in your Amex account.

Three new 60th-anniversary perks (limited-time only)

Four temporary benefits tied to the Gold Card's 60th anniversary. None recur — these are one-time promotional perks layered on top of the structural card.

Uber One membership statement credit (up to $96, through October 30, 2026): A one-time credit covering an Uber One annual membership. Redeem it inside the calendar window or lose it. Enrollment required.

MR → Hilton Honors transfer bonus, 20% (through May 30, 2026): A 20% bonus when you transfer Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors. Useful only if you have a specific Hilton redemption you've been waiting on — Hilton Honors typically values 0.5¢ per point, so MR → Hilton at 1:2 ratio + 20% bonus pushes you to ~1.2¢/point of Hilton value. Don't transfer speculatively.

The Hotel Collection special offers (through July 15, 2026): Booking select Hotel Collection properties via Amex Travel earns either a complimentary third night or 25% off select rooms. Minimum two-night stay. Useful if you were already considering Hotel Collection bookings.

Limited-time Amex Offers: Standard rotating Amex Offers tied to anniversary partnerships. Enrollment required per offer.

Annual fee and credits — the math vs the new $8K spend

Annual fee remains $325. The recurring credits:

Credit Annual value
Uber Cash $120
Dining (monthly) $120
Resy U.S. restaurants $100
Dunkin' Donuts $84

Face value: $424. Realistic capture for an active user: ~70-80%, roughly $300-340/year. That covers most of the $325 fee before you factor in the welcome bonus or your earned rewards from spending.

The new $8K spend requirement is a real shift for irregular spenders. If you previously planned a $1,000/month spend pace ($6K over 6 months), you now need ~$1,334/month to earn the bonus. That's still achievable for most household budgets, but if you were marginal at the old level, the new level may push you toward forcing artificial spend — which usually destroys the math.

Should you still apply?

Three diagnostic questions:

Can you naturally spend $1,334+/month on the Gold for 6 months? That's the new floor. The Gold's 4x dining + 4x groceries earn rates make grocery spend the easiest channel — for many households, $400-600/month at U.S. supermarkets is normal. Combined with restaurant spend, the $1,334 monthly pace is reachable for most people who eat out a few times a week.

Will you actually use the $120/yr Dining credit with the new partner list? Goldbelly and Wine.com exited June 30, 2026. The replacement merchants (Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder) are a different product mix — chain dining and a food-delivery startup. If those don't fit your pattern, that's $120 you may not capture going forward.

Do you transfer Membership Rewards to actual airline partners, not Amex Travel? The 5x prepaid-hotel earn is positive but limited. The card still earns its keep through Membership Rewards transferability — ANA, Cathay, Avios, Air Canada, Delta. If you're a "redeem at 1¢ per point" user, Gold's value collapses dramatically.

If you answer yes to all three, the refresh is mostly a wash. The 5x prepaid-hotel category and the Hertz status add modest value; the higher spend requirement is the only material drag.

Existing cardmembers — what to do

Nothing changes against the card you're holding. The 5x prepaid-hotel earn is automatic; the Hertz Five Star status requires enrollment via your Amex account; the new dining-credit partners are live now (Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder). The 60th-anniversary perks (Uber One, Hilton bonus, Hotel Collection) all require active enrollment — log into your Amex account and opt in within the listed windows.

If you were planning to apply for the Gold within the next few weeks, the refresh doesn't change the math much except for the higher spend requirement. If you're approaching it carefully, lock in your application before raising the spend friction further matters.

Bottom line

The April 2026 refresh is a small positive lean — Amex added two structural benefits (5x prepaid hotels, Hertz status) without raising the annual fee, and the dining credit's value didn't change. The spend-requirement bump is the only meaningful negative, and it's modest. The card remains the strongest dining-and-groceries earner in U.S. credit cards, and the welcome-bonus value at our 2.0¢/MR valuation ($2,000) holds.

For applicants who can comfortably hit the new $8,000 spend in 6 months, this is still a card worth applying for.
